I didn’t make any resolutions this year but I did set myself some challenges. I find challenges a good way to build habits, or break them depending upon the need.
Last year, I didn’t read anywhere near as many books as I wanted to, and so this year I decided to do something about it. I’m challenging myself to find some new favourite authors and make a dent in my to-be-read (TBR) list while I’m at it.
In true book dragon fashion, my TBR is epic; my ereader bursts with ebooks and I have two entire bookcases of paperbacks I haven’t touched, and I keep downloading ebook samples. There have to be some new favourite authors in that mess and I’m determined to find them, if only so I can add yet more books to the pile, hence the challenge.
The rules (below) are pretty simple, and I’ll be posting my progress on the blog if you want to follow along, or join in ????.
The rules are:
- Read for at least 15 minutes every day.
- When selecting a new book, pick it from the bottom of the to-be-read pile (aka, the book that’s been there the longest).
- If the book doesn’t capture you within the first chapter (or page, whichever), toss it. Life’s too short and our to-be-read lists too long for boring books.
- Rinse and repeat.
Easy, right?
To make things more interesting (for me, at least) I’m keeping a reading journal and making notes about the books I don’t toss after the first chapter. I even splurged and bought myself a little bit of fancy stationary.
What to join me?
Leave a comment below to register your interest, and we’ll see who can keep their daily reading streak going the longest! You can join at any time and are encouraged to share your progress on any the Reading Challenge post. At the end of the year (2024), the person with the longest continuous streak gets bragging rights!! (And maybe a prize.)

I have joined the Sapphic Bingo Challenge from Jae. I have to try and not read too much in one go. My eyes don’t like it. But not every book catches me in Chapter One. Sometimes it needs till Chapter 3 or 4 to get hooked.
Can you drop a link for the bingo challenge? That sounds really interesting!
